Merchant Marine's strength of schedule edge looms over WPI test
Neither team's divisional rank tells the full story here, because the schedules behind those numbers are not close. Merchant Marine carries a strength of schedule rank of 76 in D3, while WPI sits at 106, and that gap helps explain why Versus grades the Mariners so much higher across the board despite Merchant Marine sitting at No. 24 in D3 and WPI at No. 61.
Merchant Marine comes in at 6-1 with A grades in every major category, including an A- defense, and the Mariners have climbed 27 spots in the D3 rankings this season alone, from No. 51 up to No. 24. WPI is 5-2 and graded B+ overall, but its offense checks in at only a C+, and its offensive rank of 125 is a real liability against a Merchant Marine defense that ranks 43rd.
Both teams have already played SUNY-Maritime this season, and Merchant Marine's 49-point win there dwarfed WPI's 24-point margin, another data point for the gap Versus sees. WPI does have some recent form working for it, having outscored its recent opponents while winning four of its last five games, and the Engineers are 3-1 in one-score games. Still, Versus projects Merchant Marine to win 33-15, with an 85 percent chance to take this NEWMAC meeting, which counts fully in the conference standings.
