Carnegie Mellon's ratings edge outweighs Ursinus's 7-2 mark
Ursinus arrives at 7-2 and Carnegie Mellon at 5-4, but the records flip once the Versus model looks underneath them. Ursinus sits 48th in Division III, 29 spots ahead of Carnegie Mellon at 77th, yet that gap closes everywhere else that matters: Carnegie Mellon carries a power rank of 44 against Ursinus's 77, with A- grades across power, offense and defense compared to Ursinus's B, B and B+ marks and a strength of schedule rank of 95 that is among the softest in the division.
A shared opponent makes the point directly. Both teams played Gettysburg this season, and while Ursinus escaped by a single point, Carnegie Mellon won by 35. The two also met last November, when Ursinus pulled out a 27-20 win, but this year's underlying numbers point the other way.
Carnegie Mellon has been competitive in every game, with no loss by more than 10 points, even though a 1-3 record in one-score games has kept its win total down. Ursinus, meanwhile, is riding a sixth straight winning season and reached as high as No. 15 in Division III earlier this year.
This is a Centennial Conference game and counts in the standings. Versus projects Carnegie Mellon to win 31-18, giving the Tartans a 78 percent chance at home.
