Sam Houston State projected to escape home test against Nicholls State
Versus projects a 33-19 home win for Sam Houston State, an 80 percent chance and a 14-point margin that says less about dominance than about survival. The Bearkats are 0-2 and carry an FBS overall grade of D- with a national rank of 300, while the visiting Colonels sit at 203 nationally, a rank built from FCS play but still the better of the two by that measure.
This is a non-conference game between an FCS team in Nicholls State and an FBS team in Sam Houston State, and the profiles pull in opposite directions. Nicholls State is 2-1 and graded B+ overall within FCS, with B- marks on both sides of the ball, and Versus's own notes have the Colonels as the No. 3-ranked team in the Southland Conference. Sam Houston State, by contrast, is graded D- across power, offense and defense within FBS, ranked 132nd in power, 133rd on offense and 129th on defense among its own division.
The one place Sam Houston State clearly leads is strength of schedule, ranked 24th in FBS against Nicholls State's 71st in FCS, and that gap plus the home venue is enough for the model to still favor the Bearkats. But with an 0-2 record set against a two-win visitor that already grades out higher nationally, this is not the kind of home favorite that inspires much confidence beyond the number itself.
